Editor-in-chief of Prevention, Liz Vaccariello, says unfortunately, vision does decrease with age. However, there are ways to stave off age-related macular degeneration, which affects nearly one-third of the population.
Preventing Eye Vision DegenerationDr. Travis Stork: Here to help us to answer a common health hearsay question about aging is Prevention Magazines Editor-in-Chief, Liz Vaccariello and Liz todays question, “Does vision always decline with age?”Liz Vaccariello: It does, the good news is that there are easy ways to prevent the decline, macular degeneration affects about 1/3 of people.Dr. Travis Stork: So age related macular degeneration is what we call and obviously its because its related to your age and the problem with macular degeneration is affects your central vision.We have an animation of one particular type of macular degeneration where yellow is deposited occurs in the macula and of course that clouds your central vision. And the problem with that is central vision is what is so necessary for driving and reading. And a lot of people always ask me what is it like. And we actually have a really cool visual and I want everyone to look at this because look on the right up there thats what you would see if you were driving.Liz Vaccariello: That affects your life.Dr. Travis Stork: Fortunately there are things we can do to prevent that.Liz Vaccariello: There are things that we can do and they have to do with diet in particular, it really affects the eyes, certain vitamins and minerals in particular. The vitamin C found in oranges, vitamin E and beta carotene which are in sweet potatoes, zinc. These have been shown to slow the decline of the eye by about 25% when people have early warning. Also the lutein found in dark green leafy vegetables has been shown to lower peoples risks.Dr. Travis Stork: So it doesnt have to be a reality, thank you for helping us answer at Todays Health News Liz.
